| Description:
Adult:
The head is slaty-black with slight
iridescent blue gloss around the eye
and on the top of the head. Feathers
of the nape are elongated, slaty-black
with little or no iridescence. The
neck featers are even more elongated
and brilliantly glossed iridescent
green with blue and gold reflections.
The mantle and scapulars are relatively
elongated (compared to other pigeon
species), rather pointed and brilliant
iridescent green. Wing-coverts are
also somewhat pointed and iridescent
green and blue. The tertials, secondaries
and primaries are blackish with a
violet-blue sheen especially strong
on the tertials. The uppertail-coverts
and tail are white. Underparts are
entirely slaty-black with the neck
feathers elongated forming a ruff
and most feathers showing a green
and blue iridescence; very faint on
the throat, strongest on the underwing-coverts,
breast and belly. The underside of
the primaries and secondaries are
black. Iris is variable dull brown,
dark grey to whitish. Orbital skin
is black. The bill is black and the
cere has a conspicuous erect knob.
Feet are dark greyish-purple to coral
red with paler yellow or flesh-colored
claws.
Juvenile: Juveniles are oily black,
lacking the neck hackles which are
just emerging. The plumage becomes
glossier as the postnestling moult
makes it almost identical to the adult
except for the tail being entirely
or partly black. This immature plumage
may be retained for some time. Feet
are brownish.
