Adult
male: The forehead is greyish-white
with light grey scaling. The top pf
the head and nape are bluish-grey
with dull grey scaling. The back of
the neck and the upper mantle are
greyish-brown and lightly scaled grey-brown.
The mantle, scapulars, teritals, inner
secondaries, wing-coverts, back, rump
and uppertail-coverts are greyish-brown
with bold blackish-brown scaling.
The inner two pairs of rectrices are
also greyish-brown. The outer rectices
are blackish with broad white tips
and white outerweb to the outermost
feathers. The outer secondaries and
primaries are red-brown with black
tips. The primary wing-coverts are
red-brown with black tips and edges
to the outwebs. The chin and throat
are whitish with very faint scaling.
The face, sides of the neck and the
breast pale pinkish-grey with light
blackish-brown scaling. The lower
breast is pinkish brown, grading to
buffish-white on the flanks, lower
belly and undertail-coverts. Undertail
is blackish with broad white tips.
Underwing-coverts and axillaries are
black, or sometimes red-brown with
black edgings. The underside of the
flight feathers are redish-brown with
brown tips. The iris is variable,
orange to red. The narrow eye-ring
is blue-grey. The bill is black. The
legs and feet are bright coral-red.
Adult
female: Females are duller pink below.
Juvenile:
Considerably duller and more greyish-brown.
The feathering on the breast is similar
to the adult scaling. The feet and
tarsi are dull red.
