Long
pointed crest usually held erect.
Prominent black barring on scapulars
and wing-coverts.
Male: The top of the head is
grey with an erect dark crest. The
iris is orange-red. The bill is dark
grey. The face and neck are grey with
pink along the side extending to the
breast. The wing coverts are grey
with broad fawn and narrow black horizontal
stripes. The primaries are dark grey,
the innermost feathers tipped with
white. A prominent wing mirror of
metallic green and purple is on the
secondaries. The throat, breast, and
abdomen are light grey. The upper-tail
flanks and thighs are light brown.
The tall upper side is dark brown-grey
with a light grey-white tip and a
green metallic sheen on all but the
central feathers. The back, rump,
and upper-tail coverts are brown-grey.
The underside of the tail is brown-grey
with a light tip. The legs and feet
are red.
Female: The female is similar
to the adult male.
Juvenile: The juvenile is similar
to the adult but the plumage is generally
duller. The crest is less prominent
and the wing mirror and sheen on the
tail are not as bright. The bill is
horned-colored. The legs and feet
are greyish-pink.
